Estimate only — not tax/financial advice. This calculator estimates an employee's annual net salary using the 2026 federal brackets of the SPF Finances (25% / 40% / 45% / 50%, income year 2026, assessment year 2027), the 13.07% employee Social Security rate, and the €11,550 tax-free allowance applied as a €2,887.50 tax reduction. It models a single taxpayer with no dependants under the standard regime, with a selectable municipal surcharge (default 7%). It does NOT model the flat-rate professional-expense allowance, the special social security contribution (€15.45–€182.82 per quarter, excluded as small and banded), the expat cost-allowance regime, dependants, or company-car and voucher benefits. Your real net pay can differ — always verify with your employer or a tax advisor.

What this calculator does: it turns a Belgian gross salary into your estimated net pay, showing how Social Security, the federal brackets, the tax-free allowance and the municipal surcharge shape your take-home pay. It is the fastest way to judge a Belgian job offer before you sign.

What is net salary in Belgium?

Your net salary in Belgium is what lands in your bank account after your employer deducts employee Social Security (13.07% of gross) and income tax from your gross pay. Belgium's income tax has two layers: federal tax on progressive brackets, plus a municipal surcharge set by the commune where you live. Because the top 50% rate starts at just €51,070 of taxable income, Belgium's headline rates bite earlier than in most neighbouring countries.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter your gross annual salary — the full yearly figure in your contract, including any 13th month and holiday pay if your contract quotes an annual total.
  2. Pick your municipal surcharge — 7% is the average; use 0% or 9% to see the range if you do not know your commune's rate yet.
  3. Read the breakdown — Social Security comes off first, then the federal brackets apply to what remains, then the tax-free allowance credit and the surcharge are applied.
  4. Share or save the result — the "Copy link to this result" button encodes your inputs in the URL, handy when comparing two offers side by side.

The formula: how net salary is calculated in Belgium

Belgium taxes employment income in two steps: Social Security first, then income tax on what remains. In symbols:

Net = Gross − Social Security − (Federal tax − Allowance credit + Municipal surcharge)

Worked example: €55,000 gross, single, no dependants, 7% surcharge

Take an expat on €55,000 a year in Belgium. Social Security takes 13.07%, which is €7,188.50, leaving taxable income of €47,811.50. The federal bracket tax is €17,531.68 (25% on the first €16,720, 40% to €29,510, and 45% on the remaining €18,301.50). Subtract the tax-free allowance credit of €2,887.50 to get federal tax of €14,644.18, then add the 7% municipal surcharge of €1,025.09 for total income tax of €15,669.27. Result: €32,142.23 net per year — €2,678.52 per month, an effective deduction rate of about 41.6%. Compare it with our Portugal net salary calculator 2026 before you decide between offers.

Net salary at a glance: 2026 estimates by gross salary

€55,000€7,188.50€15,669.27€32,142.23€2,678.52

€90,000€11,763.00€31,772.58€46,464.42€3,872.03

The pattern to notice: because Social Security is flat and the 50% bracket starts at €51,070, the effective deduction rate climbs fast — from about 36.5% at €40,000 to about 48.4% at €90,000. That is why the expat cost-allowance regime, where it applies, is worth tens of thousands.

Belgium salary tax FAQ

On a €55,000 gross salary in 2026 (single, no dependants, 7% municipal surcharge), you pay an estimated €7,188.50 in employee Social Security (13.07%) and €15,669.27 in income tax, leaving an estimated net of €32,142.23 per year — about €2,678.52 per month. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Every employee in Belgium pays 13.07% of gross salary to the NSSO/ONSS, made up of 7.50% for pensions, 3.55% for healthcare, 1.15% for health benefits and 0.87% for unemployment. It is flat and uncapped, so it applies to the full salary, and it is deducted from your pay before income tax is calculated.

The basic tax-free allowance for income year 2026 is €11,550, raised from the indexed €11,180 by the personal income tax reform law of 15 July 2026 with retroactive effect from 1 January 2026. This calculator applies it as a tax reduction of 25% of €11,550, which is €2,887.50 off your federal tax. It is higher if you have dependent children or other dependants.

On top of federal tax, your municipality charges a surcharge of 0% to 9% of your federal tax, with about 7% the average. It depends on where you were registered on 1 January of the year after the income year. This calculator defaults to 7% and lets you switch to 0% or 9% to see the range.

The special social security contribution is a small extra quarterly charge for employees, on a banded scale of €15.45 to €182.82 per quarter in 2026. Because it is small and banded rather than a percentage, this calculator excludes it; at most it lowers your annual net by about €731.

Many Belgian employees also receive a 13th month (end-of-year premium) and double holiday pay, typically around one extra month's salary in total. This calculator treats the figure you enter as your total annual gross including any 13th month and holiday pay, and shows the 12-month average, so individual months will vary.

Yes. Belgium's special tax regime for inbound employees and researchers can exempt up to 35% of salary as a cost allowance, with a minimum gross salary of €70,000 under the reformed rules. This calculator models the standard regime only, so qualifying expats could keep noticeably more.

Your payslip shows monthly withholding tax (précompte professionnel / bedrijfsvoorheffing), which is an advance payment based on monthly tables, not the annual calculation. The annual return then reconciles withholding against your true liability, which can produce a refund or an extra payment. Company cars, meal vouchers and pension contributions also change the result.
