How Swiss salary deductions work in 2026

Switzerland runs three pillars. The first pillar is the state pension (AHV/IV/EO): employees pay 5.3% of gross salary with no cap, and employers pay the same again. The second pillar is the occupational pension (BVG/LPP): it is charged on the coordinated salary โ€” your gross minus a CHF 26,460 coordination deduction, capped at CHF 64,260 โ€” at age-based rates of 3.5% (25โ€“34), 5% (35โ€“44), 7.5% (45โ€“54) and 9% (55โ€“65). It only starts at CHF 22,680 a year. Unemployment insurance (ALV) is 1.1% up to CHF 148,200. Your employer matches all of these.

Withholding tax (Quellensteuer): the canton decides

If you hold a B, L or G permit and earn under CHF 120,000 a year, your tax is withheld at source at a rate that depends on your canton โ€” and the gap is enormous. On a CHF 120,000 salary the same job is worth about CHF 8,729 a month in Zug and about CHF 7,910 a month in Basel-Stadt under this model: a difference of more than CHF 800 a month for the same gross pay. Zurich sits in the middle at about CHF 8,456; Geneva at about CHF 8,001. Above CHF 120,000 you are assessed under the ordinary system (NOV/TOU) and file a full tax return.

Worked example: CHF 120,000 in Zurich, age 35โ€“44, single

AHV/IV/EO 5.3% = CHF 6,360. ALV 1.1% = CHF 1,320. Coordinated salary is CHF 120,000 โˆ’ CHF 26,460 = CHF 93,540, capped at CHF 64,260, so BVG at 5% = CHF 3,213. Social deductions total CHF 10,893, leaving CHF 109,107 taxable. Zurich withholding at an effective 7% = CHF 7,637.49. Take-home is CHF 101,469.51 a year, or about CHF 8,455.79 a month โ€” an effective rate of 15.4%.

What this calculator does not include

Mandatory health insurance (around CHF 300โ€“500 a month, bought privately โ€” it is never deducted from your salary), non-occupational accident insurance (NBU, typically about 1.2% of salary, varies by employer), church tax where applicable, family allowances, and Pillar 3a contributions (up to CHF 7,258 a year in 2026, tax-deductible). Add health insurance to the result above before budgeting: a realistic Zurich budget needs roughly CHF 400 a month for it.

Zurich vs Geneva vs Zug: where the money goes

Low-tax Zug looks like a clear win on paper, but rents in Zug are among the highest in Switzerland and the housing market is tight. Geneva pays some of the highest salaries in Europe but has the heaviest withholding in this model and expensive childcare. Zurich balances the two: the largest job market, a 7% effective withholding rate, and rents that โ€” while high โ€” are lower than Zug. Always compare the net figure for your canton, not the gross figure in the offer.

Our verdict: On a CHF 120,000 gross salary in Zurich this model estimates about CHF 8,456 per month take-home. Before you sign, run the same salary through your own canton โ€” moving from Basel-Stadt to Zug is worth roughly CHF 800 a month on the same pay โ€” and budget CHF 300โ€“500 a month for mandatory health insurance on top.

It depends on your canton. Under this model, in Zurich (7% effective withholding) you take home about CHF 101,470 a year โ€” CHF 8,456 a month. In Zug (4%) about CHF 104,743 a year; in Geneva (12%) about CHF 96,014 a year; in Basel-Stadt (13%) about CHF 94,923 a year.

Tax withheld at source from your salary. It applies to holders of B, L and G permits earning under CHF 120,000 a year. The rate depends on your canton, your marital status and whether you have children. Above CHF 120,000 you are assessed under the ordinary system and file a tax return.

AHV/IV/EO (state pension, disability, income-loss insurance) is 5.3% of gross with no cap. ALV (unemployment insurance) is 1.1% up to CHF 148,200. BVG (2nd pillar pension) is age-based โ€” 3.5% to 9% โ€” charged on your coordinated salary (gross minus CHF 26,460, capped at CHF 64,260). Your employer matches all three.

Yes โ€” health insurance is mandatory for everyone living in Switzerland, including expats, and you buy it yourself from a private insurer. It costs roughly CHF 300โ€“500 a month and is NOT deducted from your salary, so it is not in this calculator's result.

Zug has the lowest withholding in this model at an effective 4% for a single person, followed by Nidwalden (5%) and Obwalden (5.5%). Basel-Stadt (13%) and Geneva (12%) are the heaviest. Rents and living costs partly offset the difference.

No โ€” it is a simplified estimate. Withholding rates are effective averages for a single person with no church tax; your employer's exact tariff, your BVG plan's exact rate, and any 13th-month salary change the real figure. Use it to compare offers, not as a final payslip.

You move from withholding tax to ordinary assessment (NOV/TOU): you file a full annual tax return and pay federal, cantonal and municipal tax. Many people in this bracket also claim deductions for Pillar 3a, commuting and professional costs.

Yes. Pillar 3a contributions up to CHF 7,258 a year in 2026 are tax-deductible for employees with a 2nd pillar. It is one of the simplest legal ways to cut Swiss tax โ€” and it builds your retirement savings at the same time.
