Estimate your Dutch freelance net income: revenue and expenses in, monthly net out — after Box 1 income tax and the zelfstandigenaftrek.

Amsterdam — Netherlands ZZP freelancer tax calculator

The short answer: your ZZP net income

ExpatMoneyEU verdict

ExpatMoneyEU built this calculator for freelancers (zzp'ers) in the Netherlands: enter your annual revenue and business expenses and see your estimated net income after Dutch Box 1 income tax. The calculator is pre-filled with €60,000 revenue — change any input and the result updates instantly.

Employees in the Netherlands have tax withheld from their salary; freelancers (zzp'ers) pay income tax through their annual return, claim the self-employed deduction (zelfstandigenaftrek), and arrange their own pension and health insurance. This page explains that system, works an example with real numbers, and gives you a calculator you can reuse for any rate. Answer-block: the Dutch Box 1 top income-tax rate is 49.50% on income above the first-bracket threshold (source: Belastingdienst, the Dutch Tax Administration, 2026 rate structure).

Worked example: €60,000 revenue, €6,000 expenses

Take the pre-filled example: €60,000 revenue minus €6,000 expenses minus the €1,200 zelfstandigenaftrek gives taxable income of €52,800. Tax at 36.93% on the first €38,441 plus 49.50% on the remainder comes to €21,304 — leaving estimated net income of €32,696 per year, about €2,725 per month before your own pension and health insurance, which freelancers arrange separately. Try your own rate in the calculator above; the result updates instantly and the copy button saves your exact inputs in the link.

How to use this calculator in 4 steps

  1. Enter your annual revenue — your total invoiced income for the year, before expenses.
  2. Enter your business expenses — laptop, software, travel, phone, accountant and similar deductible costs.
  3. Check the deduction — the zelfstandigenaftrek field is editable because the Belastingdienst phases it down over time; verify the current figure for your tax year.
  4. Copy the link — the "Copy link to this result" button encodes your inputs so you can compare two rates side by side.

The formula: how ZZP income tax works

Taxable income = revenue − business expenses − zelfstandigenaftrek − other deductions. Tax = 36.93% on taxable income up to €38,441, plus 49.50% on taxable income above €38,441. Net income = revenue − expenses − tax. Remember that health insurance (roughly €1,900 per year in 2026) and pension are separate costs for freelancers — budget for them on top of the tax shown here.

How we calculated: methodology & sources

This is a simplified estimate built from the Belastingdienst 2026 Box 1 structure: two brackets (36.93% / 49.50%) applied to revenue minus expenses minus the zelfstandigenaftrek you enter. It does not model the SME profit exemption (mkb-winstvrijstelling), the labour tax credit phase-out, VAT (btw), income-dependent health contributions (Zvw), or pension. Figures are illustrative figures — always verify with the Belastingdienst or an accountant before quoting a rate to a client.

What to watch in 2027

The zelfstandigenaftrek is being phased down year by year, so re-check its current value before using this calculator for a 2027 rate. If your revenue crosses the first-bracket threshold, the 49.50% marginal rate makes gross-rate negotiations matter more than they look — always compare offers on net income, not revenue.

Disclaimer: Estimate only — not tax or financial advice. Tax rules change; verify current rates with the Belastingdienst (2026) before relying on any figure.

Netherlands ZZP calculator FAQ

On €60,000 revenue with €6,000 expenses and a €1,200 zelfstandigenaftrek, this simplified model estimates income tax of €21,304 on taxable income of €52,800, leaving about €2,725 per month before pension and health insurance. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

The zelfstandigenaftrek is a fixed deduction from your taxable profit for qualifying self-employed workers, claimed in your annual tax return. It is being phased down year by year, so this calculator leaves the figure editable — verify the current amount with the Belastingdienst for your tax year.

The employee calculator models wage tax withheld by an employer, including tax credits. The ZZP calculator models Box 1 income tax on profit (revenue minus expenses minus deductions), with no employer withholding and no tax credits — the two systems work very differently.

Most freelancers charge 21% VAT on their invoices and reclaim VAT on business purchases, filing quarterly returns. VAT is separate from income tax and is not included in this calculator's net figure.

Freelancers must buy their own health insurance — a fixed nominal premium of roughly €1,900 per year in 2026 — and arrange their own pension. Budget for both on top of the tax shown here.

The mkb-winstvrijstelling exempts 13.31% of your profit (after the zelfstandigenaftrek) from tax in recent years. This simplified calculator does not apply it, so its estimate is deliberately conservative — your actual tax may be lower.

Only as a rough guide. Employment income and freelance profit are combined in your annual return, and tax credits phase out with total income, so the combined result differs from either calculator alone.

The zelfstandigenaftrek continues its scheduled phase-down, and Box 1 brackets are indexed each year. Re-check both the deduction value and the bracket threshold before using this calculator for a 2027 rate.
