Norwegian kroner — Norway net salary calculator

The short answer: your Norwegian take-home pay

ExpatMoneyEU verdict

ExpatMoneyEU built this calculator so you can estimate Norwegian take-home pay before you sign a contract: enter your gross annual salary in kroner and see your estimated monthly net after Norway's general income tax and step tax. The calculator is pre-filled with NOK 600,000 — change any input and the result updates instantly.

Norway taxes salary in two layers: a flat 22% general income tax (alminnelig inntekt) on income above the personal allowance, plus a progressive step tax (trinnskatt) that rises with income. This page explains both, works an example with real numbers, and gives you a calculator you can reuse for any offer. Answer-block: Norway's top step-tax rate reaches 16.7% above NOK 942,400 of gross income, on top of the 22% general income tax (source: Skatteetaten, the Norwegian Tax Administration, 2026 rate structure).

Worked example: NOK 600,000 gross, 2% pension

Take the pre-filled example: NOK 600,000 gross salary with a 2% pension contribution (NOK 12,000). General income tax at 22% on income above the NOK 88,600 personal allowance comes to NOK 109,868; step tax across the 1.7% and 4.0% bands comes to NOK 13,248. Total estimated tax is NOK 123,116, leaving estimated net pay of NOK 464,884 per year — about NOK 38,740 per month. The formula: how Norwegian salary tax works

General income tax: 22% × (gross salary − pension contribution − NOK 88,600 personal allowance, floored at zero). Step tax (trinnskatt): 1.7% on income above NOK 217,400, 4.0% above NOK 306,800, 13.7% above NOK 697,150, and 16.7% above NOK 942,400. Net pay = gross salary − general tax − step tax. Employer social contributions are paid by your employer on top of your salary and do not reduce your net in this model.

How we calculated: methodology & sources

This is a simplified estimate built from the Skatteetaten 2026 rate structure: 22% general income tax, the step-tax bands above, a NOK 88,600 personal allowance, and pension contributions deducted before general tax. It does not model wealth tax, union deductions, travel deductions, the special allowance for foreign workers, or employer pension schemes beyond the percentage you enter. Figures are illustrative figures — always verify with Skatteetaten's official calculator or a tax adviser before signing a contract.

What to watch in 2027

Norway adjusts tax bands and allowances each autumn budget — re-check the step-tax thresholds and the personal allowance before using this calculator for a 2027 offer. If your income crosses NOK 697,150, the 13.7% band makes the marginal rate jump, so compare offers on net pay, not gross.

Norway salary calculator FAQ

On a NOK 600,000 gross salary with a 2% pension contribution, this simplified model estimates total tax of NOK 123,116 — NOK 109,868 general income tax plus NOK 13,248 step tax — leaving about NOK 38,740 per month net. This is an estimate, not tax advice.

Trinnskatt is Norway's progressive tax on gross income: 1.7% above NOK 217,400, 4.0% above NOK 306,800, 13.7% above NOK 697,150, and 16.7% above NOK 942,400. It sits on top of the flat 22% general income tax.

The general income tax (alminnelig inntekt) is a flat 22% on income above the personal allowance, after deductions such as pension contributions. This calculator uses a NOK 88,600 personal allowance in its simplified model.

No. Wealth tax (formuesskatt) applies to net wealth above a threshold and is separate from salary tax. It does not affect the monthly net pay shown here.

Yes — employers pay social contributions (arbeidsgiveravgift) on top of your gross salary. Those contributions do not reduce your net pay, so they are not deducted in this calculator.

Pension contributions are deducted before general income tax in this model, so they slightly lower your taxable income. Enter your contract's actual percentage — many Norwegian employers contribute more than the 2% minimum.
