VAT Calculator — Add or Remove VAT

Gross price (incl. VAT)
€1,200.00
Net: €1,000.00 · VAT (20%): €200.00

Worked example (the default inputs above): €1,000 net + France 20% VAT → €1,200 gross (€200 VAT). Reverse: €1,200 gross at 20% → €1,000 net (€200 VAT).

Key fact: France's standard VAT rate is 20% and Italy's is 22% in 2026 (European Commission VAT rates table, rates in force September 2026) — the two rates this calculator defaults to for the France + Italy cluster, with every other EU standard rate built in.

What this calculator does

This calculator does the two VAT sums every freelancer, small business and expat needs: add VAT to a net price to get the gross price your customer pays, or remove VAT from a gross price to get the net amount you actually keep before tax. It uses the official 2026 standard VAT rates for every EU country, plus a custom rate for reduced rates and special cases.

How to use it (4 steps)

  1. Enter the amount in euros.
  2. Choose Add VAT (you have a net price) or Remove VAT (you have a gross price).
  3. Pick the country rate — France 20%, Italy 22%, Germany 19% and the rest — or enter a custom rate for reduced rates.
  4. Read the result instantly: net, VAT amount and gross, with a copy link to share the calculation.

The formula

Add VAT: gross = net × (1 + rate). VAT amount = net × rate. Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate). VAT amount = gross − net. Example: €1,000 × 1.20 = €1,200 gross in France; €1,200 ÷ 1.20 = €1,000 net.

Worked example with real numbers

A freelancer in France invoices €1,000 net for a project. At France's 20% standard rate, VAT = €1,000 × 20% = €200, so the client pays €1,200 gross. The same freelancer buys equipment listed at €1,220 gross in Italy: at Italy's 22% rate, net = €1,220 ÷ 1.22 = €1,000, and the VAT inside the price is €220. Both directions matter: you add VAT when you sell, and you remove VAT when you want to know what a gross price is really worth before tax.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate). For France at 20%: €1,000 × 1.20 = €1,200 gross, of which €200 is VAT. Select “Add VAT” in the calculator above and it does the maths instantly.

Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). For Italy at 22%: €1,220 ÷ 1.22 = €1,000 net, so €220 of the price is VAT. Select “Remove VAT” in the calculator above.

France's standard VAT rate is 20% and Italy's is 22% (European Commission VAT rates table, in force September 2026). Germany is 19%, Spain and the Netherlands 21%, Portugal and Ireland 23%, Luxembourg 17%.

Net is the price before VAT. VAT is the tax amount. Gross is what the customer pays: net + VAT. On a €1,000 net sale in France, VAT is €200 and the gross price is €1,200.

Yes — use the custom rate field. Food, books, hotel stays and medicines often carry reduced rates that differ by country (for example France 5.5% or 10%, Italy 4%, 5% or 10%). Check your national tax authority for the exact reduced rate for your product.

It depends on your status and turnover: France's micro-entrepreneur regime and Italy's forfettario regime have VAT exemptions below certain thresholds, while standard regimes charge VAT. This calculator does the arithmetic only — check your tax authority or an adviser for whether you must charge VAT.

For the arithmetic, yes: enter the net amount and the applicable rate (often 0% for intra-EU B2B reverse charge, entered as a custom rate). Whether reverse charge applies to your invoice depends on the buyer, the service and both countries' rules — confirm before invoicing.

Standard rates change rarely, but reduced rates and thresholds move more often — France and Italy both adjusted reduced rates in recent years. Re-check the European Commission VAT rates table each January, and re-run your quotes with the current rate.
