Shopping in Europe, VAT and discount total calculator

Shopping Total Calculator

You pay
€80.00

Worked example (the default inputs above): €100 price, 20% discount, VAT-inclusive price, Germany 19% VAT → you pay €80.00, of which €12.77 is VAT and €67.23 is net.

Key fact: In the EU, shop prices shown to consumers already include VAT — so a '20% off' sale cuts the VAT as well as the net price, which is why the saving is not the full 20% of the net amount.

What this calculator does

This calculator answers a simple shopping question: after the discount, what do you actually pay, and how much of it is VAT? It handles both price types — the normal shop price that already includes VAT, and a net business price that excludes it — and optionally converts the total into another currency at a rate you enter.

How to use it

  1. Enter the item price and the discount percentage.
  2. Tell it whether the price is VAT-inclusive (normal shop price) or VAT-exclusive (net price).
  3. Choose the VAT rate for the country, and if you are paying in another currency, enter your exchange rate — then read the total instantly.

The formula

After discount: price × (1 − discount). If the price is VAT-inclusive: total = discounted price; net = total ÷ (1 + VAT rate); VAT = total − net. If VAT-exclusive: net = discounted price; VAT = net × VAT rate; total = net + VAT. Example: €100 × (1 − 20%) = €80; €80 ÷ 1.19 = €67.23 net; VAT = €80 − €67.23 = €12.77.

Worked example with real numbers

You buy headphones listed at €100 in a German shop during a 20% sale. The shelf price already includes VAT, so after the discount you pay €80.00 — and €12.77 of that €80 is VAT (at Germany's 19% rate), leaving €67.23 as the net price. If instead you were quoted a net business price of €100 excluding VAT, the same 20% discount gives a net of €80, VAT of €15.20, and a total of €95.20. Same discount, very different totals — which is why knowing whether a price includes VAT matters more than the discount percentage. Paying in pounds at a rate you enter of 0.85 pounds per euro, the €80 total is £68.00.

Sources and disclaimer

Method: discount then VAT arithmetic as shown in the formula. Standard VAT rates used: Germany 19%, France 20%, Spain 21%, Netherlands 21%, Italy 22%, Ireland 23%, Denmark and Sweden 25%. Reduced rates apply to many goods (food, books, medicines and more) and vary by country — this calculator uses the standard rate you select, so check the reduced rate if your item qualifies. Currency conversion uses the rate YOU enter: no live exchange rates are fetched or assumed, so the converted figure is only as current as your rate.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for consumers: prices shown to shoppers in the EU must include VAT. Business-to-business quotes often exclude it, which is why this calculator offers both modes.

Because 19% VAT is charged on the net price (€67.23), not on the VAT-inclusive total: €67.23 × 19% = €12.77. VAT is 19% of net, but only about 16% of the gross total.

Food, books, medicines and other categories often carry reduced rates (for example, 7% in Germany or 5.5% in France). This calculator uses standard rates — if your item qualifies for a reduced rate, the VAT part will be smaller.

Yes. The discount reduces the price, and VAT is then calculated on the discounted price — which is why a 20% sale saves you 20% of the total, not 20% of the net price.

No. It uses the exchange rate you enter, because live rates move constantly and a stale 'live' rate would be misleading. Enter your bank or card provider's current rate for a realistic figure.

Buying from outside the EU can add customs duty and import VAT plus handling fees, which this calculator does not include. For non-EU purchases, add those separately.

Yes — enter the basket total as the item price. The maths is identical whether it is one item or a whole basket at the same VAT rate.

Related but different: the VAT calculator adds or removes VAT on a single amount, while this one starts from a shop price, applies a discount, shows the VAT split, and optionally converts currency — the full shopping total.
